About Janice Hoscan, LMFT

I'm Janice Hoscan, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA LMFT #139263) in Santa Rosa. I work with couples and individuals across Sonoma County, and by telehealth throughout California, on the things that are hardest to carry alone: strain in a relationship, grief and loss, and the stretches of life that feel heavier than usual.

Couples therapy, including the Gottman Method

Most couples reach out when the same argument keeps circling back, when distance has crept in, or after trust has been shaken. In couples work I draw on the Gottman Method (a research-based approach to communication, conflict, and connection) to help you see the patterns between you and practice new ones together. I meet partners at every stage, from premarital check-ins to long marriages navigating a hard season. It's collaborative work: you set the direction, and we go at it together.

Individual therapy: Brainspotting and a whole-person approach

In individual therapy I work with adults facing anxiety, depression, life transitions, and loss. Alongside talk therapy I'm trained in Brainspotting, and I draw on psychodynamic and mindfulness-based approaches, shaping the work around you rather than a formula. Whether you're in a specific crisis or want to understand long-standing patterns, we'll find a pace that feels workable.

Grief, bereavement, and years alongside hospice

Grief has been at the center of my work for a long time, including years spent supporting people and families through hospice and bereavement. Sitting with people at the end of life, and with those they leave behind, taught me most of what I know about presence: that there's no single right way to grieve, no timeline you're meant to keep, and no loss too small to bring. I offer a steady, unhurried space for loss of every kind, whether it's a partner, a parent, a child, a friend, a pet, or one of the quieter losses that rarely get named.

My work with loss is also personal. I've faced serious illness myself, and that experience shapes how I sit with people through their own hardest stretches, with patience, without flinching, and without pretending there are easy answers.

How I work

My style is warm, direct, and collaborative. You work with me directly, start to finish, with no intake team and no handoffs. Every new client is welcome to begin with a free consultation to see whether we're a good fit. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA LMFT #139263), and I've built my practice around relationships, loss, and the ordinary hard patches of being human.
