Couples therapy & marriage counseling in Santa Rosa
I'm Janice Hoscan, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA LMFT #139263) in Santa Rosa, and I help couples face the things that are hardest to work through alone, whether it's the argument that keeps returning, distance that's grown between you, or trust that's been shaken. I see couples in person across Sonoma County and by telehealth throughout California, and every new couple is welcome to start with a free consultation.

When couples reach out
Most couples reach out when the same argument keeps circling back, when distance has quietly crept in, or after trust has been shaken. Others come to strengthen a relationship that's basically good, or to face a hard season together: a new baby, an illness, a loss, a big move. Wherever you are, you don't have to have it figured out before you begin.
How we'll work together
Couples work with me is collaborative and active. We look at the patterns between you: how conflict starts, where it gets stuck, and how repair happens (or doesn't). Together we practice new ways of talking and listening. I draw on the Gottman Method, a research-based approach to communication, conflict, and connection, alongside other approaches shaped around your relationship. You set the direction; we go at it together.
Every stage of a relationship
I work with partners at every stage, from dating couples deciding whether to commit and engaged couples preparing for marriage to newlyweds finding their footing and long marriages navigating a hard stretch. Marriage counseling isn't only for relationships in crisis; many couples come to build skills and reconnect well before things reach a breaking point.
I work with couples of every kind, and my practice is an affirming one, including gay and LGBTQ+ partners.

Common questions
- Do you offer a free consultation?
- Yes. Every new couple is welcome to begin with a free consultation, a short, no-pressure phone conversation to see whether we're a good fit before booking a first session.
- Do you see couples in person or online?
- Both. I meet couples in person at my Santa Rosa office and across Sonoma County, and by secure telehealth anywhere in California.
- What happens in couples therapy?
- We start by understanding the patterns between you: the argument that keeps circling back, the places connection has thinned, or the trust that's been shaken. From there we work together on communication, conflict, and repair, at a pace that feels workable. You set the direction, and we go at it together.
- Is marriage counseling the same as couples therapy?
- For how I work, yes: I use the two names for the same thing. Whether you are married, engaged, or partnered without a wedding in the picture, the work is the same, helping the two of you understand your patterns and build a stronger way of being together. People sometimes picture marriage counseling as short and crisis-focused and couples therapy as broader, but here they point to one and the same work.
- Do you use the Gottman Method?
- I draw on the Gottman Method, a research-based approach to communication, conflict, and connection, alongside other approaches shaped around your relationship.
- How much does couples therapy cost?
- Couples sessions are $240 for 50 minutes or $360 for 75 minutes. A limited sliding scale is available for those who qualify, and longer sessions are prorated.
- Do you take insurance?
- I don't bill insurance directly. If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
