Gay and LGBTQ+ couples therapy in Santa Rosa

I'm Janice Hoscan, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA LMFT #139263) in Santa Rosa, and I offer affirming couples therapy for gay, lesbian, and LGBTQ+ partners. You won't have to explain or defend your relationship here. We start from the fact that it matters, and work on whatever's hard: communication, conflict, distance, or trust. I see couples in person across Sonoma County and by telehealth throughout California, and every couple is welcome to start with a free consultation.

An affirming place to do the work

Affirming means I take your relationship as a given, not a question. I welcome gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, and nonbinary partners, and couples of every shape, whether married, partnered, newly together, or figuring out what you are to each other. The goal of our work is your relationship on your terms, and you set what that looks like.

What we'll work on

Most of what brings couples in is universal: the argument that keeps circling back, distance that's crept in, trust that's been shaken, or simply wanting to feel close again. Alongside that, LGBTQ+ couples sometimes carry things that are specific to your lives: coming out at different paces, family or chosen-family dynamics, decisions about children, or the ordinary wear of moving through a world that isn't always affirming. We make room for all of it, and follow whatever most needs attention rather than a fixed script.

Grounded in the Gottman Method

My couples work draws on the Gottman Method, a research-based approach to communication, conflict, and connection. Its research includes same-sex couples. We look at the patterns between you, practice new ways of talking and listening, and build habits that hold up over time. You can read more about Gottman Method couples therapy or about my couples therapy in Santa Rosa more broadly.

Common questions

Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. Every couple is welcome to begin with a free consultation: a short, no-pressure conversation to see whether we're a good fit before booking a first session.
Do you work with gay and LGBTQ+ couples?
Yes. My practice is affirming, and I welcome gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, and nonbinary partners of every relationship shape. You won't have to explain or defend your relationship to me. We start from the fact that it matters.
What do you work on in couples therapy?
The same things any couple brings (communication, recurring conflict, distance, trust, and reconnecting), plus anything specific to your relationship, such as coming out, family or chosen-family dynamics, or the strain of navigating a world that isn't always affirming. We follow whatever most needs attention.
Do you use the Gottman Method?
I draw on the Gottman Method, a research-based approach to communication, conflict, and connection whose research includes same-sex couples, alongside other approaches shaped around your relationship.
How much does couples therapy cost?
Couples sessions are $240 for 50 minutes or $360 for 75 minutes. A limited sliding scale is available for those who qualify, and longer sessions are prorated.
Do you see couples in person or online?
Both. I meet couples in person at my Santa Rosa office and across Sonoma County, and by secure telehealth anywhere in California.
Do you take insurance?
I don't bill insurance directly. If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
