Individual therapy in Santa Rosa

I'm Janice Hoscan, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA LMFT #139263) in Santa Rosa, and I work with adults on the things that are hardest to carry alone: anxiety, depression, a hard transition, grief, or long-standing patterns you're ready to understand. I see clients in person across Sonoma County and by telehealth throughout California, and every new client is welcome to start with a free consultation.

What individual therapy can help with

People come to individual therapy for all kinds of reasons: anxiety that won't switch off, a low mood that's outstayed its welcome, a big transition (a move, a job, a diagnosis, a relationship ending), grief, or the sense of repeating a pattern they can't quite name. You don't need to be in crisis to begin, and you don't have to have it figured out before you start.

How we'll work together

My style is warm, direct, and collaborative. Alongside talk therapy I'm trained in Brainspotting, and I draw on psychodynamic and mindfulness-based approaches, shaping the work around you rather than a formula. Whether you want relief from something specific or a deeper look at long-standing patterns, you set the direction and we go at it together.

Anxiety, depression, and living with a health challenge

Anxiety and depression are among the most common reasons people reach out; if that's you, my overview of understanding depression and anxiety is a good place to start. And when a serious or chronic illness is part of the picture, whether your own or a loved one's, the emotional weight is real; I've written about how therapy can help with managing chronic illness, something I understand personally as well as professionally.

Grief and loss

Loss threads through a lot of individual work. If grief is the main thing you're carrying, you may want my dedicated page on grief and bereavement counseling. It draws on years I spent supporting people through hospice and bereavement.

Common questions

Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. Every new client is welcome to begin with a free consultation: a short, no-pressure conversation to see whether we're a good fit before booking a first session.
What do you help with in individual therapy?
I work with adults facing anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief and loss, and the strain of a health challenge, as well as those who simply want to understand long-standing patterns. Whether you're in a specific crisis or looking further ahead, we find a pace that feels workable.
What approaches do you use?
Alongside talk therapy I draw on Brainspotting, psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches, shaping the work around you rather than following a fixed formula.
Do you see clients in person or online?
Both. I meet clients in person at my Santa Rosa office and across Sonoma County, and by secure telehealth anywhere in California.
How much does individual therapy cost?
Individual sessions are $220 for 50 minutes. A limited sliding scale is available for those who qualify, and longer sessions are prorated.
Do you take insurance?
I don't bill insurance directly. If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
